THE STORY BEHIND Hii Hii:
My eldest sister, Ember, has the biggest personality in our family.
From her bold fashion sense to charting her own career paths and being the life of any party, she's the one who always dreamt the biggest dreams and had the confidence to see them through.
Growing up, she was my first idol. She was the one who pushed back against the status quo on everything from being the only girl who played video games to being one of few who spoke our dialect, Tiv, fluently. She wasn't afraid to go toe-to-toe with the boys when she had to, but also knew how and when to show respect to our elders and preserve the traditions of our culture. But most of all, she's the one who stood in front me and my middle sister and protected us. And to this day, she still does.
In our tribe, there's both a deep honor and a heavy responsibility laid on the eldest child—wan u Hii Hii. I'll never know what it's like to be a big sister or know the weight she's carried all these years, but what I do know is that before anything else in this world, she's my big sister.
